1. Hi Mara! Are you doing?
Marvellous, thank you.

2. When you started making music?
Ever since I was a little bean... singing, playing the piano and violin (very badly) since I was about 6 years old.

3. What does it mean to you to compose music? And what do you hope to achieve through your solo-project?
I had no real ambition for this record, I just wanted to get it finished and released, which I've done, so I'm happy.

4. Are you able to give a definition to the music you compose? How would you describe your sound overall?
I'm afraid I can't, and believe me I've tried. A reviewer in Holland said that it was 'like having an angel pissing on your tongue' which was apparently a compliment, so I'm sticking with that.

MARA CARLYLE - The Lovely (2004) 5. Can you tell something about your creative process? How does an album of yours born? What does it happen in studio recording?
All the songs started life as little 4-tracks which were then re-recorded on an AppleMac using logic. It took a really long time because I had a day job (still do) and no deal to pay the musicians. I dragged in loads of friends and family who played for free - I'm very lucky to know such talented people.

6. Did Plaid help you with the arrangments and production?
I arranged and produced the record but Andy from Plaid also worked on it from the start. He ensured that it was properly recorded and mixed and did a lot of really subtle processing that made it sound beautiful and interesting and not like it was recorded at home...

7. What is the inspiration for your lyrics?
My strange little brain.

8. What artists or bands have had the biggest impact on you?
What are your favourites currently?
Too many to mention...loads of classical, bluegrass, indie and electronic records. Listening a lot to Lhasa at the moment and Max De Wardener.

9. Which moods do you like to spread most to the listeners?
And which emotions do you suppose the listeners will feel listening your music?
That scrunchy happy/sad feeling I guess.

10. How did you come to sign with Matthew Herbert's Accidental label ?
How was it been working with it?
Matthew is a friend and had offered to release something after hearing my crappy little demo. It's been a real pleasure to work with Accidental. They are nurturing and supportive but also allow freedom, like a good parent!

11. What's your opinion about the world around you and its near future?
It's a bit bleak, frankly...

12. How does your sound change and evolve in the future? Future projects?
Is it coming any new release?
I had no idea how this record was going to end up sounding and likewise with the next. I'm currently working on a Christmas song.

13. Is there anything else you would like to mention about you?
I'm doing this at work and so I'd better go before somebody notices... ciao x
